Happy Birthday Pike Place Market
08.17.2010
On August 17, 1907 a small band of farmers arrived at Pike Place and set up their displays. The cartoon above appeared in the paper that day. What is missing from this image is the flock of consumers that also arrived to buy from them. Eight farmers were there and over 2,000 people. One farmer was so overwhelmed he hid behind his cart and placed a tin can out to collect payment. The next day, forty farmers arrived. As the Market has grown it has attracted farmers, vendors and consumers from all over the world. In this day and age, ten million people come to the Pike Place Market annually to Meet the Producer.
